Are Permanent Cosmetics Worth the Price? YES!

Are permanent cosmetics worth the price? I get this question a lot in the salon, and it is completely understandable. Cost is a major consideration when deciding whether to tattoo eyebrows, lips, and eyeliner.  The average cost per procedure varies from technician to technician but usually averages between $300-$800. Cosmetic tattooing is, afterall, a para-medical procedure, and the cost reflects that.

Some men and women find it hard to justify this steep expense. Others however feel that the initial upfront cost  is a small price to pay compared to the amount of money and time you save in the long run. So what exactly makes the cost of permanent makeup reasonable? Read further to find out why permanent makeup is not only worth the price, but could benefit you in more ways than you think.

What are Permanent Cosmetics?

Permanent makeup is a form of cosmetic tattooing in which pigment is implanted into the upper layer of the skin. There are several methods of application. Read about two here. Although permanent cosmetics can fade over time and require periodic touch-ups, they are considered permanent because the color cannot be washed off.

To produce the desired results, permanent makeup usually requires one or more touch-up procedures after initial application. Initial permanent makeup application typically takes one to two-and-a-half hours to complete, and touch-ups take significantly less time. Permanent lip, eye, and eyebrow makeup are the most common forms of permanent makeup, and Makeup by Monica offers all three in her salon.

You Save Time, and Time is Money

Just for fun, I decided to run the numbers. If a person spends just three minutes a day applying makeup, that comes out to be about 18.5 hours per year. Over a five year period, that’s 92.5 hours. How much is your time worth to you?

If you add in the cost of traditional cosmetics (factoring in lost, broken, and unflattering purchases) the savings are even higher. I have not applied lipstick or liner for two years! Read about my permanent makeup experience here.

You’re Paying for Experience

The cost of the procedure should not be the most important factor when consulting a potential permanent cosmetics professional. What is most important is the training, certification, and skill of the technician. See our blog here to know what questions to ask your technician before you book your appointment. It is extremely important that you be sure to select only certified or “accredited” cosmetic tattoo professionals, also known as a certified permanent cosmetic professional.

Quality of Work

The quality of your permanent makeup will depend on the education, training, and experience of the expert you choose.  A qualified artist with a good clientele and shining references will save you money and potential heartache in the long term. A bad (potentially cheaper) tattoo artist will cost you hundreds more dollars in the long run to remove the tattoo or to have it reapplied. Take your time and be certain you are comfortable with who you choose.

Long Term Benefits

Not only does permanent makeup eliminate the daily hassle of applying makeup, which can save time and money, they don’t smear, and are great for people with allergies to traditional cosmetics. They are also an excellent option for those with poor vision who have a difficulty applying makeup.
